a laundry basket full of sentiment

7/2009, our 1 year anniversary in the house
saturday night brian and i sat on the front porch swing watching flames devour the mountain adjacent to our house. the fire was burning at the creek a few miles away. our home was never threatened, but with unpredictable 50 mile an hour winds, that could have changed at any moment. i quickly packed an 'in case of evacuation' basket and set it next to the front door.

i keep looking at that basket. it keeps reminding me how much time, effort, and energy we waste on stuff. to think that we could (easily) fill a gigantic moving van with all of our stuff, when all that matters is a laundry basket full of sentiment.

I'm so glad your house is ok!! I couldn't believe it when I read online that the evacuation site was your local high school.

I love that picture because you are grinning so huge and Brian has his standard picture face. :)

Please enjoy... said...

you are so right. when i moved from switzerland to the us, i brought only the sentimentals and a few essentials. it was hard starting new, but you know what, i survived. glad you did not have to evacuate though!!

I'm so glad that your sentiments fit in a laundry basket. probably photos. at least you can tell yourself that you know what is important and sentimental to you. your family. glad to have a friend with her head on straight.
